One Room Challenge Week 1: Trap Yourself in a Room With a Hammer and Don’t Come Out Till November 6th

Its official!! Today is the start of the 2019 Fall One Room Challenge and if you didn’t know we were chosen as a featured designer for this falls challenge! When we were asked to be apart of the ORC our jaws dropped to the floor! We have been following the hundreds of room transformations twice a year for a while now and it always proves to be our favorite time of year watching these rooms turn from drab to fab. So naturally when we were asked we thought, “oh yea we can do this!”

A little background on who we are and how we made our room choice with our current living situation. For those of you just starting to tune in, we are a design duo in the heart of wine country specializing in designing and building custom high end homes.  Our design firm, Rottmayer Design + Build, is a family business, where alongside Alex’s father, we create beautiful homes for clients mostly in Northern California. We currently live in a big ole barn just 5 minutes from the historic Sonoma Square. We moved into this space five years ago and it was our first ever remodeling project. The space consisted of two dingy apartments with unfinished drywall and exposed copper pipes. It was rough! We did a budget friendly remodel and turned the space into one larger 800 sq. ft. apartment and a 400 sq. ft. office space for our design firm. Though the commute to work was always fast and easy with minimal traffic we have finally grown out of our small apartment and have decided to expand. We are turning the office space into…

The Master Suite of our dreams!!

We are completely gutting this space so please pray for us! We are rewiring everything for our glamorous lights supplied by Hudson Valley Lighting and doubly swanky outlets from Legrand. We are redoing all the plumbing in the bathroom for our bathtub, plumbing fixtures from Rejuvenation and a giant marble Signature Hardware sink. And because we are extra we are custom building almost everything else from our vanity cabinet, caned arched doors and even our room length Fabricut upholstered bed frame. All of these interesting elements is depicted in our mood boards which we have only changed a million times before settling on the current design below. Oh and did we mention that when we say “we are doing all of this” it actually means WE are doing it…we are quite the renaissance men if you will allow us to just openly brag here, but we will add the disclaimer to just not look too close at the drywall job.

The before: here is the space when it was our office:

The empty: here is the space once we moved out our office, all the rooms as they stood and what we are working with:

So now that you have seen it empty, let’s begin! This is our current floor plan:

And this is the new floor plan we have worked to maximize our space:

Here is the break down of each room since we are doing our master suite we actually have to tackle our bedroom, bathroom and unfortunately our entry as it all ties together with this project. So in a sense we are taking on 3 rooms….I know….what are we thinking!!

So Yeah, with great suffering comes great rewards! We reached for the stars and we think our back is giving out. Since the scope of our remodel is large we decided we needed to get a head start and officially began the challenge September 1st. We are relatively on track except for a few surprises when opening up the walls and floor, like how the previous owner had completely cut through a floor framing member to plumb their toilet and just left it hanging there. Some people are just complete dodos. After much chin rubbing, light bulbs flickering and standing around like construction workers we figured out a solution and we are full steam ahead again. Drywall is going up between paragraphs and we have a take-out dinner already stocked in the fridge. We haven’t seen our friends in a few weeks and our laundry is beginning to pile up but hey its just one more month right?! Right?!!

Despite the undertone of panic you might be picking up we do feel incredibly blessed to be apart of such a cool challenge because for us this is like a fantasy. We have remodeled our apartment everyday since we have moved in 5 years ago but being able to work with so many great companies with amazing products is definitely new to us. Please tag along and browse through our photos of the progress we have made in September on our instagram stories and don’t forget to PRAY FOR US!
